Director of Finance and Operations, Men as Peacemakers

My name's Michael Duvall. I'm the director of finance and operations for a non profit organization in Duluth called Men As Peacemakers. I handle the day to day payroll, finances, budgeting and standard operations of the organization. Typical day for me is, I'm usually the first one in the office and I get things organized in the morning. Check emails and then the projects vary from day to day. Right now we're coming to the end of the quarter so I'm doing a lot of budgeting for grant proposals. And that's obviously really important. That's our primary funding source is typically from foundational grants and government grants. And every other week I do payroll. One ongoing project though that we've been working on is we recently purchased a new building so I'm handling all the construction costs and budgeting for that. And had to do a proposal to the board of directors recently which went surprisingly well. Those can sometimes get a little dicey. Especially with big projects like this one. Yeah so I work hand in hand with our development director in the beginning stages of the grant writing proposal. So he's, the development directors the one who will seek out the grants and do the verbiage and official writing of it. When it comes to budgeting and justifying the expenses that will incur that fall under those grant guidelines that's when I come in. So I'm the one that provides the numbers for the grant proposals that say this is why we need this money and what we'll be spending it on. QuickBooks is one of the most standard accounting programs and that's what I primarily work on. It's handled through a VPN, Virtual Private Network, so I'm able to work from home if I need to. And then we use the Cloud as well through Google Drive to store a lot of our public documents that we share with each other.
